Harry Dale Literary Grant for Aspiring Writers

Introduction:

Dale O’Hara, great-granddaughter of Harry Dale, wrote “Acres of Glass”, chronicling the story of Harry Dale and the Dale Estate and their influence on the development of Brampton as “The Flower Town of Canada”. Through the generosity of the City of Brampton (grant provider) and Dale O’Hara, the Brampton Arts Council was given the profit from “Acres of Glass” sales for managing the minute details to produce the book. With these funds, the Brampton Arts Council established, through the Brampton and Area Community Foundation, The Brampton Arts Council: Harry Dale Literary Endowment Fund, for the sole purpose to award The Harry Dale Literary Grant for Aspiring Writers.

Criteria:

First time writers only, non-published
Residents of Brampton
Enter competition by application, to include:
- application page with all contact information (attached)
- a one page business plan including timelines and how grant will be used within writing project
- a one page outline of the writing proposed
- a two page sample of writing that will appear in the work to be published

The decision of the Selection Committee is final.

Deadline:

August 30, 2012.

Amount of Grant:

Grant value will be determined annually. The Grant can be won only once per person. 2010's grant amount was $1, 000.

Types of Work:

Any type of literary work, including poetry, is eligible.

Conditions of Winner

Agrees to provide 3 updates on status of project over the next 12 months, via meetings for mentoring
Funds are to be used in the pursuit of publication, but not necessarily the publication itself.
Winner must be in attendance at the presentation of the award.

Behind every great enterprise such as the Dale Estate, once the third largest greenhouse operation in the world, there is a story. It is about Harry Dale, an Englishman from humble beginnings, who had a deep-seated love of roses, and who was filled with the entrepreneurial spirit that symbolized Canada in the early years of immigration. Harry Dale settled in Brampton with his parents and siblings in 1863, and with hard work and an innate business sense, he went on to build a floral empire, known throughout North America and Europe for the quality and quantity of their flowers, bringing worldwide fame to Brampton.
